Arulmozhi Varman continues on his journey to become Rajaraja I, the greatest ruler of the historic Chola empire of South India. It is the sequel to the Tamil historical novel “Ponniyin Selvan” by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which has been widely acclaimed as one of the greatest novels ever written in Tamil literature. However, if a movie adaptation of “Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two” is released in the future.
Ponniyin Selvan Part 1, also known as PS 1, was a box office success in Tamil Nadu due to its long-awaited cultural references and historical connection to Tamil audiences, but it failed to impress outside the state. However, the film was not well-received outside of Tamil Nadu as the Chol dynasty’s stories did not interest audiences in other states. While director Mani Ratnam is known for his storytelling abilities, his attempt at expanding his vision with Ponniyin Selvan did not live up to expectations, and the film suffered in comparison to other films from South India, particularly those directed by SS Rajamouli.
The sequel, Ponniyin Selvan Part 2 (PS 2), is an improvement over the first film and begins where PS 1 left off. It is more engaging and faster-paced than its predecessor, but it lacks modern storytelling techniques and updated theories. The film boasts a large cast, including Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Trisha, and Jayam Ravi, but Ravi’s character feels more like a supporting role despite being the titular character.
PS 2 has its moments, with some exceptional performances by Karthi, but there are also some irritating and melodramatic scenes that feel outdated. The battle scenes suffer from poor VFX and action choreography, and some of the CGI looks artificial. While the film has its flaws, it is still worth watching for its cast and historical storyline.
